COMPONENTS OF FOOD
VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF FOOD
Q What is nutrients?
Food contains special components called nutrients.
Q write some components of food :-
Carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, water, minerals and roughage.
CARBOHYDRATES
- Carbohydrate is most essential nutrient for our body .
- carbohydrate are easily digested.
- they provide energy to our body.
Types of carbohydrate:-
- Sugar,&
- Starch
Sources of carbohydrate:-
Sugar = fruits, milk, honey and sugarcane .
Starch = potato ,rice , wheat.
Q what is diabetes?
The excess amount of sugar in our blood results into a disease called diabetes.
India is the capital of diabetic patients.
Types of Sugar
There are 5 types of Sugar
1) GLUCOSE = It is a simple carbohydrate which directly enters into the blood and produces energy through respiration. It is an instant source of energy.
2) FRUCTOSE = It is also a simple carbohydrate , found in the fruits.
3) SUCROSE = It is table Sugar which we use in our home. It is made up of GLUCOSE & FRUCTOSE.
4) LACTOSE = It is found in milk.
5) MALTOSE = It is found in wheat .
PROTENS
1/5 Part of our body is made up from proteins.
Protein is made up from carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen & Sulphur.
WORK OF PROTEIN
1- they help in body growth.
2- they help in tissue repair.
3- they help in digestion.
4- protien make new cells.
5- protien replace old & damaged cells.
Protiens are also known as BODY BUILDING FOOD.
SOURCES OF PROTEIN
ANIMAL SOURCES:- meat, egg, fish, milk, cheese etc .
PLANT SOURCES:- peanut, soyabean, peas, barley, wheat, corn, dry fruit etc.
FATS
It is also energy giving food.
Fats are called secondary source of energy because sometimes when we are short of carbohydrate, our body uses the fat stored under the skin of our body to maintain the supply of energy.
SOURCES OF FAT
PLANT SOURCES = Groundnut oil, Sunflower oil, Mustard oil, Coconut oil, Other vegetable oils, almonds, cashews, etc.
ANIMAL SOURCES = Meat, Fish, Milk, Ghee, Cheese, Cream, Butter.
VITAMINS
vitamins are complex organic compounds called the PROTECTIVE FOODS, because they help in protecting our body against disease.
FUNCTIONS OF VITAMINS
- Vitamins are very essential for our body but in less quantity.
- They are essential for the normal functioning of our body .
- They keep our skin healthy
- They keep our teeth healthy.
- They keep our bones healthy.
- They keep our digestive system healthy.
TYPES OF VITAMINS
There are the 2 types of vitamins on the basis of solubility;
1) FAT SOLUBLE VITAMINS
2) WATER SOLUBLE VITAMINS
